Thank you for investing in Apple software. From time to time, we produce maintenance releases of our software that add minor functionality, correct defects, or respond to customer requests.
Updates, in contrast to upgrades, contain few changes from the previous version. Instead of distributing the full, revised application, we can provide just the files necessary to incorporate the new functionality and fixes. When you run the accompanying updater, it combines your ClarisWorks 5.0v1 or 5.0v2 files with the new changes to create new AppleWorks 5.0.3 files.
The following files are updated with this updater:
1. ClarisWorks 5.0v1 or 5.0v2 application
2. Read Me - AppleWorks 5.0 document
3. All Assistant files
4. All AppleScript files
5. HTML translator
6. Many files have been moved from the Claris folder (in the System folder) and/or renamed to remove references to "Claris" and "ClarisWorks."

Installing the AppleWorks 5.0.3 Update
The AppleWorks 5.0.3 Updater works with U.S. versions of ClarisWorks 5.0v1 or 5.0v2. It does not work with earlier versions or international versions.
IMPORTANT Make sure your ClarisWorks application is named ClarisWorks (i.e., that it has not been renamed). If not, this updater will not be able to update a file used to change Internet settings.
To install the update, follow these steps:
1. Before running the updater, start up your computer with extensions off by holding down the Shift key while you start up or restart. Release the Shift key after you see the "Welcome to Macintosh" message.
2. Double-click the AppleWorks 5.0.3 Updater icon and click Continue in the welcome screen.
The license agreement window will appear.
3. Click Accept to continue with the update process. If you do not agree to the license agreement, click Cancel.
The Read Me window will appear.
4. Read the Read Me information and click Continue.
The Installer will install the updater file on your hard disk and open it automatically. The updater will search your hard disk for a ClarisWorks application.
5. Click Update to proceed with the selected copy of ClarisWorks. To update a different copy of ClarisWorks, click the Select folder button to locate the desired copy.
A window with progress indicators will appear while files are being installed and updated.
Once the updater is finished, the original ClarisWorks application is moved to the Trash.
6. Click Quit to quit the updater, and you can begin using the updated version of AppleWorks. To update another copy of ClarisWorks, click Continue.
Problems and Issues Addressed in 5.0.3
The AppleWorks 5.0.3 Updater changes ClarisWorks to AppleWorks. You will notice changes to the look of the application (including the splash screen, icons and the like) and references to "Claris" and "ClarisWorks" have been removed. Version 5.0.3 is functionally the same as 5.0v2 but corrects several minor problems in ClarisWorks 5.0v1:
• The Microsoft Word 6 translator ("MS Word 6 Mac [MacLink®]") now appears in the list of available translators in the Open or Save As dialog boxes if Microsoft Word 6 is installed.
• Spaces that have been formatted with the underline style print correctly.
• Curly quotes appear correctly after section and page breaks.
• Outline styles are imported correctly when overwriting an existing style.
• Custom indents can be applied correctly when editing an outline style.
• When you use the Print button in the Button Bar to print a spreadsheet, it now prints the cell grid, row, and column headings as they look on the screen.
• You can save documents when you run ClarisWorks from a locked or read-only volume.
• A Word Services-compatible spell checker does not apply corrections to text on the previous line.
• A conflict with Spell Catcher has been resolved.
• Double-clicking a file with a name similar to another file in the same folder opens the correct file.
• Repeated copying and pasting of graphics within word processing files does not display memory alert messages.
• The Register ClarisWorks Assistant has been removed.
• The combined 68K/PowerPC ("Fat") version of the application requires about 400K less disk space.
• You can print the correct page ranges when page numbers begin with 0, including starting a print job with the page numbered 1.
